1750. Leather and wood. Undated, circa 18th century. Very Good. 8vo., 296 unnumbered pages on thick parchment with manuscript in black & red ink with two hand drawn colored illustrations, one of Jesus and one of Archangel Michael or Gabriel. Bound in the traditional method of two wooden boards covered in decorated leather with string binding. Some pencil writing and aged hand-stitched repairs on the text pages. Handwritten Coptic Ge’ez Bibles were created in Ethiopia between the fourteenth and late nineteenth centuries. Ethiopia, the first independent African nation, adopted Christianity in the 4th century after Syrian missionaries translated the Bible into Ge’ez, the language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. These Bibles usually contain the New Testament gospels, detailing the life of Jesus Christ and Christian foundations, and are often decorated with illuminated paintings of the Saints.
