This group contains personal effects of Edward "Ned" Morris Straughn who served as an orderly for Admiral George Dewey during the Battle of Manilla Bay. These include his 53 page, hand written diary, his Phillipine Campaign Service medal and his personal razor in its' original box. The diary is half calf with black cloth over boards, with four raised bands and gilt lining, all edges marbled. Pages consist of blue lined composition paper with the majority of the handwritten narrative recto. Very Good condition with very legible handwriting. Very Good. Item #24785
Straughn left this carefully maintained diary describing his experiences and providing insight into the attitudes of an average American serviceman during the dawn of American expansionism. He notes that he travelled 25,390 miles in his time on board. Laid in are newspaper clippings, a list of Olympia officers and a photo post card.
