New York: Printed by Alexander S. Gould, 1848. 1st Edition. Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Very Good. Item #11060

1st editions. Two volumes. A Very Good set. Publisher's red blind stamped cloth with gilt spine titles. 8vo., xxxii, 559, 582 pp, large folding map, folding charts, maps, plates, illustrations. The cloth is bright, both volumes tight, some light to moderate foxing on most leaves, some leaves clean and a few others more heavily foxed. A nice set. Very Good. *** New York City Mayor A. Oakey Hall's set with his signature, dated Dec., 1852 on the front paste down of each volume. An old news clipping has tanned the signature in Volume One. At that time he was the assistant district attorney for New York County. He was Mayor from 1869 - 1872, a Democrat supported by Tammany Hall and Boss Tweed. He was often caricatured by Thomas Nast and was especially despised because of his lofty ambitions while being corrupt. Recent scholarship has showed him in a much better light but he remains an important and colorful figure during the Tammany Hall regime and the tensions between the Protestant political hierarchy and the newly emerging power of the Irish immigrants. ***.
