New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1892. 1st Edition. Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Good. Item #012831

1st trade edition. SIGNED by the author with a long, hand-written poem and inscription. A Good copy. 12mo. White and light blue cloth. The spine is losing its white color, with a tide line; general soiling. Internally very clean, with the exception of a laid in leaf that discolored the pages abutting it. The INSCRIPTION is to Kirk Mimrue(?) with Eugene Field's love, and is followed by the third stanza, ten lines, of THE SONG OF LUDDY-DUD, in Field's small, neat hand. Dated Chicago, July 17th, 1893. "Luddy-Dud's cradle is swinging, Where softly the night winds blow, And Luddy-Dud's mother is singing, A song that is sweet and low....". After her husband's death, Mrs. Field designated "THE SONG OF LUDDY-DUD" as her husband's favorite poem, for its tenderness and affection, to The Outlook (May 9, 1896).
