A Very Good set. 4to., [Vol.1] xvi, 224 pp., 29 plates (some color), 19, (1); [Vol.2] xxxii, 276, 44 plates (some color), 23 pp. Uniformly bound in half red leather and cloth, with titles on the six compartment spines in gilt. t.e.g. Edges untrimmed. Light soiling and wear to the boards; spine darkened to a deeper red; Vol. 1's front joint rubbed. Gilt tops a bit dust soiled. A Very Good set. *** Plates are in Fine condition, with the engravings retaining their richness and deep blacks; color plates vibrant. *** Ambroise Firmin-Didot came from a dynasty of printers, publishers and booksellers, established in Paris since 1713. Born in 1790, he took over his father's business. He was a great collector of books and manuscripts. At his death in 1876, a significant part of the collection was auctioned off in a series of sales held between 1878 and 1884.***.
