Very Good. *** Virginian and author, Marion Harland (her pen-name), or Mary Virginia Hawes Terhune was a popular author of fiction, meant primarily for women. She went on to write non-fiction as well as a cookbook and domestic guide for women. This title, LOOKING WESTWARD, written while she was in her eighties, deals with growing old and the autumn of life. She mentions at a time when the average life expectancy was 45, a person of 40 could expect to reach 68, and how this would only be extended further in the future, as medical knowledge increased... ****.
