1895 edition. 3 volume set, complete. A Good set. 8vo., [Vol.1] xxvii, 29-535, 125; [Vol.2] 539-1003, 125; [Vol.3] 1007-1580, 35, 125 pp., illustrated with numerous advertisements, and 120 maps and plans of cities (all folding). Bound in the publisher's red cloth, with the title on the spine and flap tab in gilt. All text block edges marbled. The red covers are well worn, with rubbing, chipping, and tears along the flap's tab and joints. Volume 3 's flab is missing a section of its tab, that would cover the fore edge. Volume 3's rear hinge is nearly cracked/torn through, but still attached. Internally, the contents, text, ads, and maps are Fine. Overall, a Good set (with Vol.3 being Fair). *** Contains 120 plans and maps of late Victorian European cities. Numerous adverts for Casinos, Hotels, Ocean Lines, Cities, Ports, Clothiers, Hatters, and many others.*** Guidebooks emerged when grand tours began to go under. With all their anachronisms, these red-bound oldies are still most useful for their painstaking descriptions of the enduring sights -the frescoes in the palaces of Tuscany, the panoramas from alpine peaks, the beauty of Lake Como. The level of detail is amazing. ***.
