1st edition, 1st printing. A Very Good or better copy. 12mo., (2), 447 pp., + pages of ads at the rear. Bound in the publisher's green cloth, with the title and the seal of Illinois on the spine. The cloth is sunned/age toned to a brown, particularly the spine. Some minor wear to the cloth at the spine's crown and foot. Bright yellow end papers. Text is generally clean and bright, with a couple of specks of foxing on the title page. A Very Good copy. Howes F-254. *** The first printing's title page declares the history "From its commencement as a state in 1814", while Illinois did not actually become a state until 1818. This is fixed on later printings. Further sub-titled "Containing A Full Account of the Black Hawk War, The Rise, Progress, and Fall of Mormonism, The Alton and Lovejoy Riots, and Other Important and Interesing(sic) Events". Note the additional typo in the subtitle. Written by a Former Governor and published in Chicago before the Great Fire. ***.
