A Very Good copy. 8vo., [Vol.1] xiv, 17-326; [Vol.2] viii, 9-303 pp., illustrated with numerous steel engraved plates, all in vol. 1 hand-colored, with frontispiece and engraved title page in vol. 2 also hand-colored. Bound in publisher's brown embossed cloth, with title and lion battle motif in gilt on spine; same motif embossed on the front board. Some wear to the cloth, particularly at the crown and foot of the spine, with a small loss at crown. Some browning to the paste downs and the first end paper, else internally clean and bright. A Very Good copy. *** The plates are beautifully hand colored in 8 to 10 different colors. They appear to have been colored by the publisher. All plates in vol. 1 are colored, with the frontispiece and engraved title colored in vol. 2. Added illustrated title page has title: A Hunter's life in South Africa. *** Scottish traveller and sportsman, known as the "lion hunter," was the 4th baronet of Altyre and Gordonstown. At eighteen, he joined the East India Co.'s service as a cornet in the Madras Light Cavalry. A hunting enthusiast, his first books with greeted with incredulity, until David Livingstone, of Stanley fame, vouched for the accuracy of his big game narratives in public.
