A day-by-day account of the impeachment trial of North Carolina Governor, William Woods Holden. Holden is the only governor, of any state, to be impeached, tried, and removed from office. He was convicted on 6 of the 8 counts charged. The 6 counts included illegally declaring the counties of Alamance and Caswell to be in insurrection, ignoring writs of habeas corpus, and illegally raising militia. Holden maintain that all the actions he took were necessary, under the Reconstruction Acts, to combat the Ku Klux Klan, who had hanged two prominent African-americans at the courthouse of each of those 2 counties. Known as the Kirk-Holden wars, Holden's militia had arrested over 100 prominent county residents, including ex-Congressmen.
